USA Today ran a story about a new trend in American home buying. The article discusses that newly constructed homes have nearly doubled in size since 1960. Last year new construction homes decreased in square footage for the first time in 10 years.
In Cincinnati, many residents are looking to move from the suburbs closer into the city. This has prompted developers to acquire and leverage infill which usually results in smaller lots for the homes to be built on. Many homebuyers are looking for more efficient and economical homes, with less square footage closer to the city center. This trend is a relief in many ways. (not the least of which is a big smile from Mother Earth!) One thing many of today’s home buyers don’t realize is that the use of space has come a long way. Used to be smaller, ranches felt cramped and boxed in because the rooms were small and the ceilings low. Today, builders are opening up the space and making better use of the square footage they do have. It makes for a home that feels bigger than it might seem. At Potterhill, we call it the “clown car effect”!
Trisha – it is nice to hear a building is respondng to this trend.

That was a very interesting article. That was a pretty amazing fact that since 1960 new construction has doubled.
